Much Ado About Nothing - the plot

Victoria Fairweather, an influential and demanding client from New York, who regularly buys theatre plays, comes to watch a rehearsal of the new play she has recently bought. Ashley, the director of the play, welcomes her in her theatre and explains what the play is about. Then they watch the rehearsal together. The new play is ‘Much Ado About Nothing’ and here is a short summary:

Don Pedro, Prince of Arragon, his brother Don John and his companions Claudio and Benedick return to Messina from a battle. Awaiting them are Leonata and her husband Leonard, their daughter Hero and Hero’s cousin Beatrice.

Beatrice and Benedick enjoy outwitting each other and both generally speak very negatively about the other sex and about marriage. They both vow never to marry and would rather die unmarried than make a fool of themselves by falling in love. Therefore it is no surprise that Benedick mocks Claudio when Claudio tells him that he is madly in love with the beautiful Hero. Don Pedro, however, plans to help Claudio, and not only that, he also develops a plan to make Benedick and Beatrice fall in love with each other.

Don John, on the other hand wants to destroy these marriage plans and finds a way to interfere and do mischief.

Will Benedick and Beatrice really fall in love with each other? And will Don John’s plan to destroy the marriage actually work? Will Claudio marry Hero or will the whole story be turned upside down? And what have cats and lions got to do with it?

All this remains to be seen in this spectacular comedy.

Viel Lärm um nichts - das Stück

Victoria Fairweather ist eine einflußreiche und anspruchsvolle Kundin aus New York, die regelmäßig Theaterstücke kauft. Aus diesem Grund besucht sie auch Ashley, die Regisseurin ihrer neuen Errungenschaft, im Theater, um sich eine Durchlaufprobe des aktuellen Stücks ‚Much Ado About Nothing’ anzuschauen. Ashley nimmt sie in Empfang und erklärt ihr, um was es in dem Stück geht:

Don Pedro, der Prinz von Arragon, sein Halbbruder Don John und seine beiden Freunde Claudio und Benedick kehren aus dem Krieg zurück und machen Zwischenstopp in Messina. Dort werden sie schon von Leonata und ihrem Mann Leonard, Leonatas Tochter Hero und Heros Cousine Beatrice erwartet.

Beatrice und Benedick ergehen sich in Wortgefechten und haben beide eine sehr negative Einstellung zum anderen Geschlecht und zur Ehe. Und beide schwören sie, dass sie niemals heiraten werden und lieber unverheiratet sterben wollen, als sich der Liebe wegen zum Affen zu machen. Deshalb überrascht es nicht, dass sich Benedick über Claudio lustig macht, als dieser ihm erzählt, dass er sich unsterblich in die schöne Hero verliebt hat. Don Pedro hingegen will Claudio helfen, Hero für sich zu gewinnen, und darüber hinaus schmiedet er einen Plan, um Benedick und Beatrice zusammen zu bringen.

Nur Don John ist nicht begeistert von Claudios Hochzeitsplänen und weiß schon, wie er diese durchkreuzen und Unheil anrichten kann.

Werden sich Benedick und Beatrice wirklich ineinander verlieben? Und wird Don Johns Plan, die Hochzeit zu zerstören, tatsächlich aufgehen? Wird Claudio Hero heiraten oder geht alles letztlich doch ganz anders aus? Und was haben Katzen und Löwen mit der ganzen Geschichte zu tun?

Diese turbulente Komödie wird all das enthüllen.
