As you like it - the plot
Celia and her cousin Rosalind live at the court with Celia’s mother,
Duchess Freda. Rosalind’s father, the rightful duke, was banished to the
Forest of Arden by the Duchess, his sister and Rosalind is only allowed
to live at the court, because she is very close friends with her cousin
Celia.
The court regularly organizes wrestling matches. Young men come to the
court to challenge Charles the Wrestler, but no one so far as ever been
able to beat him. Orlando, too is willing to try a fall. Orlando is the
youngest son of Sir Rowland de Boys and lives at the estate of his
brother Oliver, who after the death of their father, is in charge of
everything.
Rosalind is utterly thrilled by Orlando’s courage and the Duchess has
also noticed this. To vent her displeasure, she banishes Rosalind, as
she cannot bear the thought that Rosalind is loved and admired by
everybody. Celia and Rosalind are shocked by the Duchess reaction and
by the prospect of living a live apart from each other and decide to
flee to the Forest of Arden and to find Rosalind’s father there. They
ask Touchstone, the court jester, to accompany them, and in order not to
get into trouble, Rosalind decides to disguise herself as a man.
After the wrestling, Orlando returns home to his brother’s house and is
immediately alarmed to discover that his brother intends to murder him
should he remain at his brother’s estate. So Orlando, too leaves for
the Forest of Arden and soon meets the Duke, Rosalind’s father and his
followers there.
Rosalind, Celia and Touchstone arrive in the forest, exhausted and
hungry, and by chance come across an old shepardess and a young shepard,
whom they ask for some food and lodging. In the meantime, Oliver, too has decided to follow his brother to the
forest and there he later on meets Rosalind and Celia. Finally, they all meet Rosalind’s father and his followers.
How it’ll all end and what else will happen in the forest that remains
to be seen.
As you like it is a romantic comedy with lots of ups and downs. The play also contains one of the most famous Shakespeare monologues.
The melancholy Jacques recites: “All the world’s a stage and all the men
and women merely players….”

Celia lebt mit ihrer Cousine Rosalind am Hof ihrer Mutter, der
Herzogin Freda. Herzogin Freda, die Schwester von Rosalinds Vater, dem
rechtmäßigen Herzog, hat ihren Bruder in den Ardenner Wald verbannt, um
selbst an die Macht zu kommen. Dass Rosalind überhaupt noch am Hof leben
darf verdankt sie ihrer Cousine und engsten Freundin Celia.
Am Hof werden regelmäßig Ringkämpfe ausgetragen. Jünglinge des ganzen
Landes versuchen sich mit dem Ringer Charles zu messen, doch niemand
konnte ihn je bezwingen. Auch Orlando will sein Glück wagen und tritt
gegen Charles an. Orlando ist der jüngste Sohn des Freiherrn Rowland de
Boys und lebt am Hof bei seinem Bruder Oliver. Oliver hält nach dem Tod
des Vaters die Fäden in der Hand.
Rosalind ist sichtlich beeindruckt von dem mutigen Jüngling Orlando und
auch der Herzogin ist dies nicht entgangen. Aus Unmut darüber, dass
Rosalind stets bei allen sehr beliebt ist, wirft sie sie kurzerhand vom
Hof. Celia und Rosalind sind erschüttert bei dem Gedanken daran, dass
sie von nun an getrennt leben sollen und fassen den Entschluss,
gemeinsam zu Rosalinds Vater in den Ardenner Wald zu fliehen. Der
Hofnarr Touchstone soll ihnen dabei ihr Begleiter sein. Damit sie aber
nicht in Schwierigkeiten kommen, beschließt Rosalind sich als Mann zu
verkleiden.
Orlando kehrt nach seinem Kampf an den Hof seines Bruders zurück und
wird sofort gewarnt, dass sein Bruder vor hat ihn umzubringen. Also
flieht auch Orlando in den Ardenner Wald. Dort trifft er bald auf
Rosalinds Vater und dessen Gefolge.
Rosalind, Celia und Touchstone kommen erschöpft und hungrig von ihrer
langen Reise im Wald an und begegnen zufällig einem Schäfer und einer
Schäferin, die ihnen Nahrung und Unterkunft bieten können. Auch Oliver
ist unterdessen seinem Bruder Orlando in den Wald gefolgt und trifft
später auf Rosalind und Celia.
Letztlich vereinigen sich alle bei
Rosalinds Vater und seinem Gefolge.
Wie das Ganze dann ausgeht, und was sonst noch so im Wald passiert, das bleibt abzuwarten.
As you like it ist eine romantische Komödie mit allerlei Verwicklungen und Verwirrungen. Das Besondere an dem Stück ist, dass daraus ein sehr berühmter Shakespeare Monolog entstammt. Der melancholische Jacques rezitiert: “All the world’s a stage and all the men and women merely players....”
